Conservative County Councillor for West Bridgford West, Hari Om, has renewed his call for a new, properly located Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) to serve West Bridgford and the wider West Rushcliffe area.
Speaking at today’s Full Council meeting, Cllr Om highlighted the ongoing problems with the current Rugby Road site, which he described as “no longer fit for purpose.”
“On the surface, Rugby Road may look convenient, but in practice it is in the wrong place for a community that has grown far beyond what the site was ever designed to serve.” he said.

Residents have long raised concerns about congestion from queuing vehicles, dust, and safety issues on surrounding roads, particularly at weekends and in warmer weather. The centre itself suffers from limited internal capacity and has no room to expand, as housing development has gradually reduced the available space around it.
“Residents deserve better – cleaner, safer, and more accessible facilities,” Cllr Om added. “We are also told that a booking system cannot be operated permanently at Rugby Road, which only reinforces the urgent need for a new, purpose-built site that can meet current and future demand.”
A review carried out under the previous Conservative administration recognised these issues and identified potential alternatives. Land next to the Gamston Highways Depot has been earmarked as a possible location for a new “supersite,” designed to provide modern facilities, improved access, and greater capacity.
Cllr Om urged the current Reform-led administration to act:
“This is not an easy task, but our residents expect progress. The sooner a new site is ready, the sooner we can decommission Rugby Road, which has become a blight on some nearby residents. I will continue to press this issue – in Council, in committee, and in the community – until West Bridgford and West Rushcliffe get the recycling facility they need.”
