A tree planting in the grounds of Southwell Minster will mark the launch of this year’s Bramley Apple Festival.
The Dean, Canon Neil Evans, and Festival Chairman Colonel Roger Merryweather will plant the tree before the Dean opens the Festival at the Minster’s Festival of Food and Drink.
Earlier in the year, another tree planting took place in the grounds of the Hearty Goodfellow pub, near to where the original Bramley Apple tree is growing in the town’s Church Street.
Bramley Apple Day takes place this year on Saturday 25th October. New this year is a People’s Choice Shop Window Award, sponsored by Newark and Sherwood District Council.
Major attractions include the Festival of Food and Drink at the Southwell Minster 10am-3.30pm with over 30 food and drink stands and demonstrations co-ordinated by Teresa Bovey.
The National Trust’s Workhouse will feature apple printing; the longest apple peel competition and the paupers will sing as a pop-up choir.
Entries for the Bramley Apple Pie Baking Competition will be displayed at the Bramley Centre which will also see the crowning of the Bramley Apple King, Queen, Prince, and Princess.
The original Bramley Apple tree on Church Street will be open for viewing between 11am and 3pm. The Hearty Goodfellow and other eateries will serve apple themed meals and local butchers, and other shops will offer apple products.
“This will be a great day for the town, and we are especially grateful for the sponsorship provided by Nottinghamshire County Council, and Newark and Sherwood District Council,” said Roger Merryweather.
