Bassetlaw District Council is encouraging residents and businesses to put plans in place that will help them to prepare for any potential flooding as part of Flood Action Week.
Following the arrival of the first named storm of the season, Storm Amy, the Environment Agency’s Flood Action Week, which takes place between 13th and 17th October, helps to remind people living in areas that can be prone to flooding, whether from river or surface water, to think about the potential risks to their property and how they can be prepared.
There are many steps that people can take to be ready; these include signing up to weather and flood alerts, preparing a flood plan and emergency kit, and thinking about investing in your own sandbags or other methods of flood prevention.
Cllr Darrell Pulk, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods said: “Flooding can happen anywhere and taking a number of small steps will help you to be prepared should you be affected by flooding.
“These can include very simple steps such as signing up to flood alerts or more practical and physical measures that will help to protect your homes or businesses.
“You can visit the flooding section of our website where you will find lots of helpful information and advice on what you can do now or in the event of a flood.”
In preparation of autumn and winter when the weather can bring the greatest threat of flooding, Bassetlaw District Council has restocked all its Community Flood Resilience Stores and is working with Parish Councils and Nottinghamshire County Council who operate flood stores in other areas of the district.
Community Flood Resilience Stores contain sandbags and other equipment that can be used to help protect homes and businesses in the event of a flood. They are only opened where there is imminent risk of flooding occurring due to flood warnings, or where a severe weather warning has been issued.
There are 23 stores in total across the district, six owned by Bassetlaw District Council the rest by Parish Councils and Nottinghamshire County Council.
