An investigation continues after a car was seen submerged in the River Trent.
A multi-agency response was launched after 5am on Saturday (15 November) as reports came in that a car was in the river near Wilford Suspension Bridge, West Bridgford.
Officers have been working around the clock to establish the full circumstances of what happened through witness accounts and a trawl of CCTV footage.
The underwater search team has also been deployed to search the river with sonar equipment – technology that uses sound waves to detect, locate and map objects underwater.
Police divers’ efforts continue to be hampered due to the weather conditions and the fast flow of the river, meaning they are unable to enter the water at present.
Although the car has not been recovered, detectives have traced the registered keeper of the vehicle, and their family has been updated and continue to be supported by officers.
Detective Sergeant Rachel Mayfield, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:
“Since this investigation launched, we’ve been working hard to locate the car, any possible occupants and establish what exactly has led to the vehicle going into the water.
“Unfortunately, the river is running very high and fast due to the high amounts of rainfall we’ve had recently, so the dive team are currently not able to enter the water.
“Once there is an update, we will provide one. Until then, I would ask that people do not speculate on what has happened.”
