Plans to demolish a former hotel and existing food outlets, in an effort to revamp a “tired” Nottinghamshire service station, have emerged.
Muskham Services, along Great North Road / A1 near Newark, could be revitalised after Welcome Break Services Limited submitted plans to Newark and Sherwood District Council to demolish the existing Burger King, Greggs and the former Travelodge building.
Documents say the plans are to “rejuvenate” a “tired” service station with a “modern roadside service area”, including various retail offerings and charging points for electric cars. The services are used for car and HGV refuelling.
If approved, the Burger King, Greggs and hotel buildings would be torn down and replaced with a single building featuring a drive-through coffee shop, food-to-go outlets, a seating area, a games zone, toilets and showers.
Documents say: “As the road network has evolved, so has the need for RSAs [roadside service areas]. The older, original service areas have struggled to meet the demands of the modern road user, becoming overcrowded and outdated.
“Welcome Break seeks to develop a high-quality, forward-thinking RSA with a multi-use amenity building and the full range of fuel options to appeal to the full spectrum of passing motorists within a logically laid-out site.”
The Travelodge at the site was closed and abandoned around five years ago, according to the plans.
If the proposals are approved, the existing HGV pump islands would be removed and replaced in a position that improves the “circulation” of vehicles, essentially providing better separation between them and regular cars.
The existing car pump islands and shop would be retained, extra car parking would be created, and 18 new electric vehicle charging bays are planned.
One of the UK’s leading motorway service operators, Welcome Break runs 59 service areas and 31 hotels across the country, and serves more than 85 million customers each year.
Plans say the revamp project would create 10 full-time jobs alongside the existing 30 full-time jobs.
The district council will decide on the application at a later date.
