Conservative Councillor Richard Butler (Cotgrave) has formally presented a petition at today’s Full Council meeting (19 March) calling for urgent action to address the condition of roads in Kinoulton and surrounding villages.
The petition, led by local resident Mrs Jan Horter, was signed by more than 500 residents from Kinoulton, Hickling and nearby areas, highlighting serious concerns about dangerous road surfaces, particularly along Hickling Lane, which has become heavily affected by large and deep potholes.
Speaking at the meeting, Councillor Butler raised the alarm about the impact these defects are having on local communities. He emphasised that the current state of the roads poses a significant risk to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, and has already resulted in frequent vehicle damage.
The petition calls on the County Council to take immediate and decisive action. This includes conducting a full inspection of affected roads in and around Hickling, scheduling and carrying out urgent repairs to address potholes and improve safety, and clearly communicating planned works and timelines to the public.
Councillor Butler said: “These road conditions are simply unacceptable. Residents are rightly frustrated and concerned about their safety, as well as the damage being caused to their vehicles. Hickling Lane in particular has become hazardous and requires urgent attention.”
Like many councillors, Councillor Butler has received a high volume of complaints from residents regarding potholes and deteriorating road surfaces. In Kinoulton, roads such as Hickling Lane and Main Street have been a consistent source of concern.
Councillor Butler added: “I am extremely grateful to Mrs Horter and everyone who supported this petition. It sends a clear message that our communities will not accept being overlooked when it comes to road maintenance.”
While acknowledging that some roads are now included in this year’s highways maintenance programme, Councillor Butler stressed that much more needs to be done to ensure rural roads are safe and fit for purpose.
Residents are now hopeful that the petition will lead to meaningful and lasting repairs on these busy rural routes.
