Reels of cable found in car boot in latest cable theft arrest

Police have made a further arrest as part of ongoing efforts to tackle cable theft in Newark.

Response officers on patrol near Newark Castle Station became suspicious of a vehicle, which sped away. They quickly caught up with it at around 11:50 pm on Monday (30 March).

The car was found stopped with the engine running but no driver inside. Officers then discovered an individual attempting to hide in the passenger seat.

An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of cable theft. A search of the vehicle uncovered large amounts of copper wiring, with signs the plastic covering had recently been burnt off. The cable was seized.

The arrest forms part of a joint operation between Newark neighbourhood policing and response teams, who have been working together for several weeks following reports of cable theft in the area.

Recent targeted patrols have already led to significant results, including the recovery of 1,700 metres of stolen cable and multiple arrests linked to incidents on the A616 near Kelham and elsewhere.

Tackling serious acquisitive crime, including cable theft, has now been set as a neighbourhood policing priority in Newark.

Inspector Charlotte Ellam, District Commander for Newark and Sherwood, said officers would continue to focus on preventing these offences, which can cause dangerous conditions and costly power outages.
