Knives discarded on Nottingham city shop shelves – two arrested

Two suspects were arrested after three knives were found discarded in a Nottingham city centre shop.

Police officers from the knife crime team were on patrol in Lower Parliament Street, Nottingham, around 3.50pm on Thursday (16 April) when they spotted a teenager who was wanted for other matters.

The youth and another teenager who was with him were observed to go into the nearby Boyes store.

During searches of the shopping aisles, three knives were found discarded on shelves.

Officers detained the two suspects, aged 17 and 18, within the store and they were both arrested on suspicion of possession of a knife in a public place.

The 18-year-old was further arrested on suspicion of engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, committing grievous bodily harm and strangulation in relation to a previous domestic incident.

Police Constable Dan Cresswell, of the knife crime team, said:

“We strongly suspected these two individuals were attempting to evade us by going into a shop.

“When that happens it usually means they are in possession of something they shouldn’t be, whether that be weapons or drugs.

“Knife carriers are also quite prepared to discard weapons in public with little regard to the dangers this presents to others.

“In this instance, we were able to recover three knives and detain both suspects.

“Anyone carrying a knife should be aware the city has excellent CCTV coverage and they can expect to be arrested, charged and placed before the courts as well as being banned from specific areas.”
