A leading figure at West Bridgfordians Cricket Club has been recognised with one of English cricket’s highest honours.
Cate Hayes has been presented with an ECB Honorary Life Vice-President Award for 2026, an award given to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the game.
Cate’s story began more than 20 years ago when her son wanted to give cricket a go. What started as helping out at junior sessions at West Bridgfordians’ Stamford Road ground soon developed into a lifelong commitment to improving opportunities for young players and families at the club.
Since then, Cate has become central to the growth of cricket at the club, helping to develop one of Nottinghamshire’s largest junior sections, now supporting around 400 children across all age groups.
Her work spans everything from organising junior training and fixtures to supporting coaches, volunteers and parents (and much more), alongside playing a major role in developing women’s and girls’ cricket locally.

Cate also serves as Administrator for the East Midlands Women’s Cricket League and has helped to create more opportunities for female participation in the sport, with player numbers continuing to grow year after year.
In a letter confirming the award, ECB Chair Richard Thompson praised Cate’s “outstanding dedication to cricket” and “remarkable impact” in helping to make the game more inclusive and accessible.
The award was formally presented at the ECB Annual General Meeting and Whole Game Conference at Edgbaston earlier this week.
West Bridgfordians’ Chair, Jon Sheard, said: “Everyone at West Bridgfordians Cricket Club is absolutely delighted to see Cate recognised with this hugely prestigious honour. Her dedication, energy and commitment to the club over so many years has been nothing short of extraordinary.
“Cate has played such an important role in shaping the club we are today, helping hundreds of young people discover and enjoy cricket while creating a welcoming, supportive environment for players and families alike. So much of what happens at the club simply would not be possible without her tireless efforts.
“This award is thoroughly deserved, and we are all incredibly proud of her. On behalf of everyone at WBCC, congratulations Cate, and thank you for everything you continue to do for our club and our community.”
