Nottingham traffic warning as city-wide roadworks programme ramps up

A wide programme of roadworks across Nottingham is set to affect traffic and bus journeys through to the end of May and beyond, with a mix of long-term schemes and short-term closures impacting key routes across the city.

Among the most significant ongoing works are those linked to National Highways, with parking restrictions in place on Woodside Road between Derby Road and University Boulevard until 31 May. This forms part of wider works in the A52 corridor, an area already experiencing sustained disruption in recent months.

Elsewhere, a number of residential and distributor roads are subject to closures or restrictions. Thane Road, Abbeyfield Road, Redfield Road and Bull Close Road are all affected by closures and parking suspensions until early May for highways works. A longer-term closure is also in place on Lindfield Road between Alwyn Road and Shipley Road until 21 August, due to works by Severn Trent.

On Nuthall Road, one of the city’s key arterial routes, lane closures are in place between Western Boulevard and Melbourne Road until 17 July for footway improvements. Additional short-term closures and maintenance activity are also scheduled along the same corridor in late April, adding to the likelihood of delays.

A series of temporary traffic signal controls are also being introduced at various junctions across the city in April and May. These include multi-way lights at Bulwell Lane and Rosegarth Walk for gas works, and further signal controls at locations including St Ann’s Way, Wilford Lane, Denman Street West and Birchover Road. These measures are expected to slow traffic, particularly during peak periods.

Short-duration road closures are planned across several neighbourhoods, often lasting one to three days. These include Heathcote Street, High Cross Street, Poulton Drive and Lamcote Grove for utility works, alongside closures in residential areas such as Mapperley Hall Drive, Goose Gate and Arleston Drive later in May. Many of these works are being carried out by utility providers including Severn Trent, Cadent Gas and National Grid.

Further disruption is expected from resurfacing and infrastructure maintenance schemes. Carriageway resurfacing will lead to closures and restrictions in areas including Wemyss Gardens, Middleton Boulevard and later Melbourne Road, Robins Wood Road and Aspley Lane. In addition, works near Bobbers Mill Bridge and Alfreton Road will involve lane closures for resurfacing in mid-May.

Transport infrastructure maintenance is also contributing to the disruption. Network Rail is carrying out annual testing works affecting areas such as St Albans Road, where a level crossing closure is planned, and Mansfield Road, where parking suspensions will be in place. Tram repair works will also require the closure of Goldsmith Street between Shakespeare Street and Talbot Street towards the end of May.

In the shorter term, a number of one-day or overnight works are scheduled, including white lining on Mansfield Road, telecoms repairs in Valley Road and Park Road, and signal pole replacements. While brief, these works may still lead to localised delays and diversions.

City centre traffic will also be affected at times, with taxi bay suspensions planned on Upper Parliament Street for the installation of a new bus shelter.

Motorists and public transport users are being advised to plan ahead and allow additional time for journeys, particularly where multiple schemes overlap. While many of the works are essential for maintaining and upgrading infrastructure, the cumulative impact is likely to be felt across the network, especially during peak travel times.
