New images show new houses planned on former care home site

New artist impressions reveal how 20 new high quality homes on the site of a former Kirkby care home will look.

Ashfield District Council is progressing with plans for the houses on Fairhaven, which will be known as Kirkland Gardens, after the application was previously approved by its Planning Committee.

These houses, on the former Kirklands Residential Care Home and Day Centre site, will be for residents currently on the housing register.

The Council is now in the process of undertaking all relevant surveys with an intention to start on site in Autumn 2026. The application proposes 100% affordable properties which will be a mixture of two and three bedroom homes, two-bed bungalows and one and two bed flats.

Access to the properties will be via Fairhaven and Central Avenue, leading to Kingsway.

Kirklands Residential Care Home and Day Centre closed in 2016, with the building demolished in 2020 after falling into a state of disrepair and has been left derelict since.

The development will take around 18 months to complete.

The Council is also in process of buying a site off Southwell Lane, Kirkby, with the hope of building 70 homes.

Cllr Andy Meakin, the Council’s Executive Lead Member for Social Housing and Assets, said:

“It is great to see work is now progressing to make these new homes a reality – giving more Ashfield families on our housing register a place to call home.“This site has become a magnet for antisocial behaviour over the years so this will give it a new lease of life as part of our commitment to providing safe and affordable housing.”

The new homes are part of Ashfield District Council’s pledge in 2023 to build more than 200 new homes within four years. This was on top of the 100 built since 2018.

This includes 16 new homes just around the corner in Adrian Sheldon View, Kirkby, and work is nearing completion on 40 properties in Hardwick Lane, Sutton.

Other developments have included disabled adapted bungalows, family homes, and flats on various garage sites in Hucknall and Kirkby, as well as utilising a former under-used car park and other sites for homes in Sutton.
