Councillors launch formal campaign for West Bridgford Town Council

Two Rushcliffe councillors have launched a campaign calling for a Community Governance Review into the possible creation of a West Bridgford Town Council.

Councillor Ted Birch and Councillor Keir Chewings have established the West Bridgford Town Council Campaign and launched a public petition seeking the signatures required to trigger a formal review by Rushcliffe Borough Council.

The campaign argues that West Bridgford is one of the few major communities in Rushcliffe without its own parish or town council, despite neighbouring communities such as Bingham, Cotgrave, Radcliffe-on-Trent, East Leake and Keyworth all benefiting from dedicated local councils.

Both councillors have first-hand experience of parish-level local government. Councillor Birch previously served on Bingham Town Council, while Councillor Chewings currently serves on Cotgrave Town Council.

The campaign is seeking support for a Community Governance Review, the legal process through which residents can ask Rushcliffe Borough Council to consider the creation of a new parish and town council.

Councillor Ted Birch said:

“West Bridgford is a thriving and distinctive community, yet it remains one of the few major settlements in Rushcliffe without its own local council.

“Many neighbouring communities already have parish or town councils which provide a dedicated local voice and focus entirely on the needs of their residents. We believe the people of West Bridgford should have the opportunity to decide whether they would like the same.”

“We’ve started this campaign to advocate for our members in West Bridgford and because Keir and I have first-hand experience of how important town councils are to local communities.”

“With local government reorganisation on the horizon, it is vital that West Bridgford has its own dedicated local council and a strong voice representing local residents so that decisions are made locally, not by distant councillors.”

Campaign organisers estimate that 2,400 valid signatures will be required to trigger a Community Governance Review.
