Petition calling for Government U-turn on Nottingham City Council expansion launched

A petition has been launched calling on the Government to do a U-turn on their decision to scrap district councils in Nottinghamshire and create an expanded city council.

On 16 July, the Government announced its decision to expand Nottingham City Council into large areas of Broxtowe, Gedling and Rushcliffe, despite tens of thousands of people expressing their opposition by signing petitions when the proposals were first discussed.

Councillor Mike Adams, Leader of the Conservative Group on Gedling Borough Council, said the Government needs to admit it has got this wrong and reverse its decision.

Cllr Adams said: “The Labour Government has been forced into a series of u-turns already in the last two years and they need to do another one.

“This proposal has been made to cover up poor decisions made by Nottingham City Council in the past and to provide more land for housing development. Our residents do not want this, and we will stand up for them.”

Councillor Jonathan Wheeler Chairman of Rushcliffe Conservatives says local people have been ignored.

Cllr Wheeler said:

“More than 15,000 people signed the Rushcliffe Conservative-led petition opposing inclusion in a new Nottingham City Council, and the Labour Government has ignored them.

“We all know this is a cynical move for political reasons and our residents will suffer as a result. It is not acceptable and we are calling on the Government to stop this while they still can.”
