The Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government Steve Reed made the announcement met in the Commons a few moments ago.
West Bridgford, Arnold and Beeston will become part of an enlarged Nottingham authority after ministers confirmed plans to reorganise local government across Nottinghamshire.
The government has selected Nottingham City Council’s proposal, which divides the existing boroughs of Rushcliffe, Gedling and Broxtowe between two new unitary councils.
Under the plan, urban areas closest to Nottingham, including West Bridgford, Arnold and Beeston, will join the new city-based authority.
The remaining parts of Rushcliffe, Gedling and Broxtowe will form part of a second Nottinghamshire authority alongside Ashfield, Bassetlaw, Mansfield and Newark and Sherwood.
All nine existing city, county, district and borough councils will eventually be abolished and replaced by the two new authorities, which will each take responsibility for services including social care, roads, planning, housing, waste collection and council tax.
The changes will not affect parliamentary constituency boundaries.
Elections to the new councils are expected in May 2027, with the authorities due to take full control of services in 2028.
