Man admits college tool thefts and attempted theft of copper piping

A 32-year-old man has pleaded guilty to three burglaries in Newark, including two at a college where power tools were stolen.

William Meakin, of Gainsborough Road, Newark, appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Monday 12 October, where he admitted three counts of burglary, two counts of fraud by false representation and further theft and driving offences.

The court heard that Meakin had broken into Newark College, on Friary Road, on 30 June and 6 July.

Power tools worth hundreds of pounds each were stolen during the burglaries and subsequently taken to a nearby shop, where Meakin attempted to sell them.

Police linked him to both incidents after examining CCTV footage from the shop.

Meakin was arrested following a further burglary at an empty house on Yorke Drive, Newark, on Saturday 10 October.

Officers were called to the property at around 2.40pm following a report of a burglary in progress.

At the scene, they found copper piping piled on the landing and an immersion heater downstairs near a broken window.

Meakin, who had entered the property intending to steal the piping and heater, was located nearby and arrested.

He was subsequently charged with the three burglaries and two fraud offences, as well as theft from a vehicle, taking a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent and driving offences.

Meakin pleaded guilty to all the charges at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court.

He was released on conditional bail and is due to be sentenced at the same court on 13 November.
