NET explains tram shutdown after communications failure across network

Nottingham Express Transit (NET) has said a widespread communications failure forced it to withdraw all tram services on Thursday evening, 22 October.

Services resumed on Friday morning, 23 October, after technical teams worked through the night to identify and test the fault. However, NET has warned passengers that disruption and delays could continue throughout the day while testing and monitoring take place.

The operator said the failure began on Thursday afternoon and left it unable to communicate with any of its trams. The problem persisted into the evening, prompting the withdrawal of services under its safety procedures.

Gareth Race, engineering director at NET, said: “Yesterday afternoon (22 October), we experienced a widescale communications failure which saw us lose all communications with our trams. This persisted over the course of the evening, and as such, we made the difficult decision last night to withdraw all services in line with our safety procedures.”

NET’s statement identifies a communications failure as the reason for the shutdown but does not specify what caused the fault.

Mr Race said: “Our technical team have been working through the night with the support of industry experts to identify the cause of the fault. The fault was identified and rigorously tested overnight, with service resuming this morning (23 October).

“However, passengers may still experience some ongoing disruptions and delays throughout today as we continue to test and monitor the situation across the network.”

He apologised to passengers affected by the shutdown and thanked them for their patience and co-operation.

Passengers are advised to check the NETGO! app and NET’s website for the latest service information and further updates.
