Two officers knocked over by electric dirt bike during incident in Nottingham park

Two police officers were knocked to the ground by an off-road bike during an incident at Southglade Park in Bestwood, Nottingham.

A 37-year-old man has been charged with multiple offences following the incident, which happened at around 5pm on Monday 26 October.

Neighbourhood officers were patrolling the park when they witnessed antisocial behaviour which they believed involved an illegal electric dirt bike.

Police approached the rider and attempted to detain them. A struggle followed, during which two officers were knocked to the ground by the bike.

Zakaya McKen, 37, of Monroe Walk, Bestwood, has since been charged with failing to stop, drink-driving, driving without insurance, failing to provide a specimen for analysis and assaulting an emergency worker.

He has been released on bail and is due to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on 26 November.

The incident comes amid ongoing patrols by Bestwood and City North neighbourhood policing teams targeting antisocial behaviour involving off-road bikes, electric bikes and e-scooters.

Officers have been focusing on the illegal use of high-powered electric dirt bikes, including Sur-Ron-style vehicles, on public roads and in community spaces.

Sergeant Ash Small, from the Bestwood neighbourhood policing team, said: “People need to know that if they choose to use illegal bikes or scooters on our roads, or ride them in an irresponsible fashion, we will take positive action.

“It is against the law for mechanically propelled off-road bikes that don’t meet specific requirements to be ridden on the streets, full stop.”

He added that some high-powered or modified electric bikes may not meet the legal requirements for road use and that vehicles classed as motor vehicles must comply with relevant licensing and insurance rules.

Police said they would continue to investigate reports of illegal riding and antisocial behaviour across the City North area.
