A52 road closures: Overnight restrictions and three-day weekend closure at Wheatcroft junction

Motorists using the A52 through Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire face a series of overnight road closures and lane restrictions over the next two weeks, including a three-day closure affecting the westbound Gamston Link Road at Wheatcroft junction.

National Highways has confirmed a programme of work involving utility improvements, road maintenance, surveys and the replacement of roadside lighting, with restrictions affecting several sections of the route between Nottingham and Derby.

One of the most significant closures will begin at 8pm on Friday 23 October, when the westbound Gamston Link Road at Wheatcroft junction will close until 6am on Monday 26 October.

The eastbound carriageway will remain open throughout the weekend, but drivers travelling westbound through the affected section will need to follow the signed diversion.

Lane closures are also scheduled on approaches to Wheatcroft Island in both directions from Thursday 15 October, continuing at various times until Friday 23 October.

National Highways has confirmed the weekend closure as part of its ongoing A52 Nottingham junction improvement programme.

Elsewhere in Nottinghamshire, overnight surveys will require lane closures in both directions between Bardills Roundabout and Priory Roundabout, including restrictions from 8pm on Thursday 15 October until 8pm on Friday 16 October.

Further overnight closures are scheduled between the same junctions on Monday 19 October, while separate Cadent Gas works will affect both directions between Bramcote Island and Priory Roundabout that night. These restrictions are scheduled from 8pm until 6am the following morning.

Drivers travelling towards Nottingham city centre will also encounter overnight maintenance restrictions on the A52 eastbound between Dunkirk and the Queens Drive Roundabout. Slip road and lane closures are planned between 9pm and 5am on Monday 19, Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 October.

To the west, motorists travelling towards Derby will face a longer series of closures while National Highways carries out electrical work associated with its programme to replace existing roadside lighting with more energy-efficient LED systems.

The A52 westbound carriageway between M1 junction 25 and Spondon Roundabout is scheduled to close overnight on Thursday 15 and Friday 16 October, and again each night from Monday 19 to Friday 23 October.

The restrictions, operating between 8pm and 6am, also affect Cole Lane, Victoria Avenue and Borrowash Road, together with the M1 junction 25 exit slip road leading to the A52 westbound.

The lighting programme forms part of wider National Highways work across the Midlands, with the authority aiming to retrofit most of the region’s roadside lighting by March 2027. It says the replacement technology could reduce energy consumption by up to 65 per cent.

Further restrictions are expected at M1 junction 25 from Monday 26 to Thursday 29 October, when an overnight ‘up and over’ closure is planned on the A52 westbound.

This arrangement will divert traffic off the main carriageway and back onto it using the junction slip roads, allowing work to take place on the section crossing the motorway junction.

The improvements form part of several separate programmes being undertaken along the A52, meaning drivers may encounter different restrictions depending on their direction of travel and the time of day.

National Highways has advised motorists that planned closures can change at short notice and that drivers should check the latest travel information before setting out.
