Armed police arrest man after homeowner disturbed by smashed window

Firearms officers tracked down a suspect in an attempted break-in within minutes.

Officers from the armed policing team were on patrol in the Arboretum area when the call came in.

A man dressed all in black was disturbed by the homeowner as they unsuccessfully tried to break into their property.

The man reportedly smashed a window at the North Sherwood Street flat, before fleeing from the scene.

This happened around 2.55am on Saturday (20 December), with responding officers arriving minutes later and conducting an area search.

By 3.06am, armed policing officers had stopped someone matching the suspect’s description in Forest Road West.

Officers at that point also spotted a screwdriver on the floor near the individual, while he was found with gloves in his possession too.

Based on all this, the 54-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary.

Inspector Chris Chell, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“The officers from our armed policing team did a great job responding to this report as quickly as they did.

“Having been out on patrol when a call about this attempted burglary came in, the team immediately made their way there and carried out an area search.

“That led to a suspect being stopped and detained nearby by the officers within the space of just a few minutes.

“We hope the speed which our officers responded to this incident provides the public with some reassurance and shows how seriously we take offences of this nature.”
