Armed police stop stolen moped driven through pedestrian city street

Armed police officers stopped a stolen moped in its tracks as it headed towards them.

The policing team were initially called to Nottingham city centre to try and find a stolen red Yamaha bike.

While scouring the area for that moped, officers noticed a separate white Yamaha on their patrol that aroused suspicions.

A rider was at that point seen to travel up Clumber Street – narrowly avoiding pedestrians – around 9pm on Sunday (16 November).

The white moped was spotted again shortly after that weaving through stationary traffic and running red lights near Woodborough Road.

Officers from the Armed Policing team then saw it drive through another set of red lights and head towards them along Huntingdon Street.

At that point, they turned on their blue lights, with the rider responding to this by mounting a kerb and attempting to drive along the pavement.

This resulted in the rider losing control of and falling off the white Yamaha bike – which was later confirmed to be stolen – just a few seconds later.

A 15-year-old boy – who was unharmed during the incident – was subsequently arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, theft of a vehicle, and other driving offences.

Police also managed to locate and recover the stolen red Yamaha moped they’d initially been called about later that same night too.

Sergeant Richard Hallam, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“This incident served as a good example of the type of reports our Armed Policing teams can receive while we’re out on patrol.

“By being out on the roads as we were that night, we were able to spot a moped being driven in a dangerous manner through Nottingham city centre.

“We then found ourselves in the right place at the right time to bring the bike to a halt when we saw it again shortly after that.

“All this meant we were able to recover what turned out to be a stolen moped and arrest a suspect in the process too, which was a pleasing result.”
