Armed police to patrol Nottingham Winter Wonderland to reassure public

Police officers will once again be patrolling the city centre and Old Market Square as the festive season gets under way.

Officers will mix with the public, stopping to talk to people regularly as they walk around Winter Wonderland – which opens tomorrow (12 November) – and the city centre.

As well as high-visibility patrols by the City Centre Neighbourhood Policing Team, armed officers will also be deployed as reassurance to the public that we are there should anyone needs us.

Octavian security guards will also be at the Winter Wonderland site, with My Local Bobby officers from It’s in Nottingham carrying out foot patrols alongside Nottingham City Council’s Neighbourhood Support Officers.

“With larger numbers of people coming into the city centre to enjoy the Christmas market, festive events and do their Christmas shopping at this time of year we step up our policing accordingly to provide reassurance and maintain a safe and enjoyable atmosphere.

“Patrolling the market is something we do every single year when it takes place, so it is not unusual to see officers walking within the city centre and throughout the festivities that take place within the centre.

“We are here to protect the public and will always continue to do so as they enjoy the Christmas festivities within Nottingham.

“We want everybody to enjoy their time walking throughout the market and that is why we continue to work alongside partners including Nottingham City Council, the Mellors Group, who run the Winter Wonderland, and licensed venues on security measures to keep people safe.

“As always, we would urge anyone visiting crowded places to be vigilant, keep an eye on their belongings and report anything suspicious or out-of-place to us on 101, or 999 in an emergency.”
