Arrest after patrol spots man in street with ladders and an axe in the early hours

Police made an arrest after spotting a man walking down the street in the early hours with a set of ladders.

A force dog handler was on patrol in a vehicle in Rosemary Street, Mansfield, around 1.25am on Wednesday (9 April).

He observed a man carrying a set of retractable ladders and a rug with folded items underneath it.

The suspect ran when the police vehicle approached but was quickly detained.

Other officers then recovered the rug and an axe from behind a wall nearby.

A 39-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of going equipped for burglary and possession of an offensive weapon.

Inspector Chris Chell, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“Officers are always alert on patrol so they can spot suspicious activity and take appropriate action.

“The specialist dog handler observed something which clearly didn’t look right and was able to detain this suspect who we believe was carrying the items he needed to carry out a burglary.

“The arrest also demonstrated strong teamwork with other officers responding to the call and liaising closely with our control room.”
