Arrest after stolen moped pursued by police officers

Newark police officers managed to find a stolen moped’s location and arrest two suspects too.

Police had been on the lookout for the vehicle after hearing it had been taken from Barley Way, on Tuesday (6 May) night.

Fast forward a few hours to Wednesday morning and response officers spotted the moped while out on patrol, so decided to follow it.

A pursuit then began when the bike was ridden away from officers – firstly down a footpath near Bowbridge Road and then towards Newark Northgate train station.

The chase ended soon afterwards when officers used their local knowledge to intercept the moped when it doubled back and tried to escape down a footpath known locally as the Sustrans.

After bringing the stolen bike to a halt, officers managed to detain two suspects.

A 19-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy were both arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving and failing to stop.

Sergeant Greg Saxelby, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“This was a great example of our officers utilising their knowledge of the area to bring a safe resolution to an ongoing incident.

“After hearing a moped had been stolen from outside a property earlier in the night, the response team spotted a vehicle matching its description while out on patrol.

“Working in tandem, our officers managed to track the moped and bring it to a halt when it tried to go down a footpath known locally as the Sustrans.

“As well as seizing the stolen vehicle, they were also able to arrest two suspects, so this proved to be a successful job for the team.”
