Council leader ‘absolutely delighted’ with HS2 plans for Rushcliffe

Plans for a HS2 hub at Toton were scrapped by the Government in favour of the line going to East Midlands Parkway.

Long-awaited plans revealed last month that HS2 lines will go to East Midlands Parkway station at Ratcliffe-on-Soar and HS2 trains will travel from there to Nottingham city centre on main rail network lines.

Leader of the council Cllr Simon Robinson (Con) said he thought billions of pounds of investment in the region should be “really welcomed”.

The Government says journey times for London to Nottingham and Nottingham to Birmingham will be cut dramatically once the plans are in place.

In a full council meeting on 2 December, Cllr Robinson told members: “I would like to acknowledge the Integrated Rail Plan which came out recently, reflecting the huge implications for Rushcliffe.

“As you’re aware, the hub is going to come into Parkway. This is something my predecessor campaigned for in 2012, so we have come round full circle and will now have HS2 come into Rushcliffe.

“We’re absolutely delighted, the investment it is going to bring and the implication to this borough is going to be substantial, as well as the electrification of the mainline.

“Times are going to cut considerably and that is something businesses have been petitioning me about for many years.

“We are delighted with those announcements by the Government with over 12 billion pounds worth of investment in this region, I think that should be really welcomed.”

It marked a contrast to comments made at a Broxtowe Borough Council meeting last month as Toton’s HS2 hub was scrapped.

Councillors from all parties expressed their disappointment at the plans.

But the Government said a new main rail network station in Toton will be built and a disused line through north Nottinghamshire will be re-opened.

Nottinghamshire County Council leader and Mansfield MP Ben Bradley claimed that the East Midlands was the “big winner”.
