Council leader on why council tax in Nottinghamshire increases in 2026 / 27

Details on the 2026/27 Nottinghamshire County Council Budget have been released today.

Councillor Mick Barton, Leader at the county council, said: “This is our first budget as an administration and I’m proud that we’ve set one of the lowest Council Tax rises in over a decade. We know that people are struggling still with the cost of living so we want to help our residents as much as we can.

“Over the next 3 years we’re investing a further £374m into improving our highways, school buildings and delivering additional school places.

“We’re increasing the investment on highways as we know it’s residents’ number one priority. So next year we’ll spend £49m and over the next three years we’re investing £153m into our roads. And on top of that we’re investing £40m on the A614/A6097 Corridor Improvement.

Councillor Barton added: “This budget protects frontline services in adults and children’s social care, the elderly and the family unit are foremost in our thinking as an administration.

“There are no cuts to libraries or youth services, and they’ll be no job cuts. We’re doing things in a more modern, business-like, and efficient way, and next year will deliver £18m worth of efficiencies.

“This is a balanced, transparent, and well managed budget that will show we’re doing things differently.”

Councillor Stuart Matthews, Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources, said: “As a businessman for more than 50 years, I’m bringing a business approach to this budget.

“We’ve worked tirelessly for months identifying £44.2m of efficiencies across the whole council over the next three years, £18m of which will be actioned in 2026/27.

“In the last eight months, I’ve identified £1.6m savings in the employment of agency staff and a number of long-term contracts are now under review so we can get better value for money for our residents.
