Covid infections and hospitalisations rise in England

COVID-19 infections continued to increase in England in the latest week (ending 26 November 2022).

 

In Northern Ireland, COVID-19 infections increased in the week ending 23 November 2022. The trend was uncertain in Wales and Scotland in the week ending 24 November 2022.

The estimated percentage of people living in private households (those not in care homes or other communal establishments) testing positive for COVID-19 was:

  • 1.73% in England (1 in 60 people)
  • 1.43% in Wales (1 in 70 people)
  • 2.00% in Northern Ireland (1 in 50 people)
  • 1.68% in Scotland (1 in 60 people)

Since the end of June 2022, most COVID-19 infections in the UK have been Omicron variant BA.5. A BA.5 sub-lineage, BQ.1, has been increasing considerably in recent weeks. The Omicron BQ.1 variant accounted for 43.9% of all sequenced infections in the week ending 13 November 2022. Other BA.5 variants (and sub-lineages, excluding BQ.1) comprised 34.6% of all sequenced COVID-19 infections.

Between 30 November 2022 and 6 December 2022, there have been 309,797 tests. This shows an increase of 7.9% compared to the previous 7 days.

Cases in England

A confirmed case is someone who has tested positive for coronavirus.

Between 27 November 2022 and 3 December 2022, 23,216 people had a confirmed positive test result. This shows an increase of 12.2% compared to the previous 7 days.

 

Vaccinations in England

Vaccines are given in several doses.

45,365,837 people had been given a first dose by the end of 4 December 2022.

42,864,504 people had been given a second dose by the end of 4 December 2022.

33,835,193 people had been given a booster or third dose by the end of 4 December 2022.

Healthcare in England

Some people with coronavirus have to go into hospital.

Between 29 November 2022 and 5 December 2022, 4,113 went into hospital with coronavirus. This shows an increase of 11.7% compared to the previous 7 days.

There were 5,501 patients in hospital with coronavirus on 7 December 2022.

Some people in the hospital need to use a special device called a mechanical ventilator to help them breathe.

There were 119 coronavirus patients in hospital beds with a mechanical ventilator on 7 December 2022.

Deaths in England

Between 27 November 2022 and 3 December 2022, there have been 334 deaths within 28 days of a positive coronavirus test. This shows a decrease of -24.8% compared to the previous 7 days.
