Dangerous driver who ‘frantically’ fled over hedges faces jail term

A dangerous driver frantically climbed over fences and hedges in a desperate bid to avoid the police.

Alex Swain, aged 23, was driving a stolen car when we was spotted by officers in Beacon Drive, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, on the evening of 11 March this year.

Dangerous driver

Despite the presence of snow and ice, he sped away from pursuing officers – driving at excess speed in a residential area and at one point sliding dangerously towards a parked car.

He then abandoned the vehicle near Coniston Road and fled through neighbouring gardens – clambering over fences and hedges as he tried to get way.

The arrest

A cold and soggy Swain was later tracked down to a nearby address and arrested.

He later pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving without insurance, and driving whilst disqualified.

In court

Appearing at Nottingham Crown Court on Wednesday (28 June), Swain, of Chesterfield Road North, Pleasley, was jailed for a total of 12 months.

He was also disqualified from driving for a further two years.

Further offence

The sentence also covered another offence committed by Swain in the local area, when he threatened to destroy a man’s car in a row over money in Kirkby on April 25.

Police comment

Detective Constable Colin Jones, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Swain has consistently shown a blatant disregard for other people and their property.

“When spotted by us driving in treacherous conditions, he made a conscious choice to speed away through a residential area.

“These roads had not been gritted and he could very easily have caused a very serious collision.

“I am pleased he has now been jailed and hope he uses his time behind bars to get the help he needs to change the direction of his life.”
