The main demolition works started today Tuesday 29 September.
Alliance Leisure, the council’s Development Manager, has appointed Universal Civils and Build as Principal Contractor for the demolition works. The demolition programme is expected to take around 12 weeks, although timings may vary depending on site conditions as work progresses.
Residents should expect increased construction traffic and noise during the works. Universal Civils and Build has put a range of measures in place to minimise disruption wherever possible, including dust suppression systems, noise and vibration monitoring, traffic management arrangement and environmental controls.
Residents living close to the site will receive a letter from the contractor ahead of the works, and members of the project team will also be visiting neighbouring properties to provide information about the programme and answer any questions residents may have.
The demolition marks an important milestone in the council’s plans to regenerate the site and develop the new Carlton Active leisure centre.
Plans for Carlton Active are continuing to move through the necessary design and approval stages, with the planning application expected to be considered by the Planning Committee during autumn 2026.
The council has also continued to develop the design for Carlton Active, following feedback received during consultation. Updated designs include changes to the building’s frontage, including additional glazing to create a more open and welcoming appearance and provide greater visibility of activity within the facility.
As the project still has several important stages to complete, including planning, detailed design, funding arrangements and subsequent council approvals, dates for the start of construction and the opening of the new centre cannot yet be confirmed.

“There is still work to be completed before we reach the construction stage for Carlton Active, but we will continue to keep residents informed as the project moves through its next stages.”
The council will provide further updates as the demolition progresses and as key milestones for Carlton Active are reached.
