Authorities have continued their crackdown on illegal e-scooter use, seizing an additional 106 vehicles in December.
This brings the total number confiscated to 205 since the introduction of a “seize at first offence” policy in early November.
The enforcement has been carried out across the county, with most seizures occurring in Derby city centre and nearby suburbs.
Under the revised policy, officers no longer issue warnings for first offences but instead confiscate the e-scooters being used unlawfully.
PCSOs (Police Community Support Officers) have also been given powers to seize and address the use of illegal e-scooters, reflecting the priority placed on this issue in response to community concerns.
According to the law, privately owned e-scooters cannot legally be ridden on public land, including roads, cycle lanes, or pavements, as they fail to meet insurance and regulatory requirements. More information about the legislation can be found on the UK government website under “Powered Transporters – GOV.UK.”
Superintendent James Thompson commented on the policy’s early success: “This new approach has proven effective in its first two months. Our goal is to spread awareness to prevent buyers from unwittingly breaking the law and to send a clear message that illegal use of our roads and pavements will not be tolerated. Our Safer Neighbourhood Teams will continue proactive efforts to seize e-scooters and educate communities about the regulations.”
