Driver who filmed 70 mph red-light run convicted after posting video online

A dangerous driver helped to convict himself by posting footage of his crime on Facebook.

Jack Slack filmed himself passing through a red traffic light in Mansfield at 70mph before speeding further along Abbotts Road and Beck Lane.

The footage, which showed Slack overtaking other vehicles in a dangerous manner, was passed to the Nottinghamshire Police Safety Camera Partnership by a member of the public on 30 October 2024.

A police officer was then able to trace the exact time and location of the offence by matching Slack’s registered VW Polo to traffic data recorded at the time of the incident on Sunday 27 October.

Slack, now aged 21, admitted to being the driver after responding to a second notice of intended prosecution letter, but declined to answer any questions put to him at a subsequent police interview.

After initially pleading not guilty, Slack, of Markham Road, Beeston, later admitted dangerous driving.

Appearing at Nottingham Crown Court on 6 March, he was given an eight‑month prison sentence suspended for two years, banned from driving for 18 months, and ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work.

If he is to drive legally again, he will need to pass an extended driving test.

PC Dean Melbourne, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“It’s unusual that offenders convict themselves in this way, but that is exactly what Slack did when he chose to post this alarming and incriminating footage online.

“I can only assume he thought his actions were in some way worthy of boasting about. In reality, they placed multiple lives in danger – including his own.

“As he has just found out to his cost, we take an extremely dim view of this kind of behaviour – as do the courts.”
