Drug driver caught twice by same police officer

A man who was caught drug-driving twice in 17 days by the same police officer has been jailed.

Kristian Kumbrija will spend the Christmas period behind bars after magistrates handed him a 16-week custodial sentence.

The 25-year-old has also been banned from the roads for six years.

Kumbrija, of Langsdown Grove, Long Eaton, was first stopped by police at 11.50pm on 21 August this year.

Officers followed the grey Mercedes A200 after smelling cannabis emanating from the vehicle in Faraday Road, Lenton.

Kumbrija was pulled over in Deakins Place.

He was arrested by PC Dan Bird, of the Radford Road response team, after a quantity of cannabis was found inside the car along with smoking paraphernalia, including a grinder.

Kumbrija was taken into custody, where further inquiries found he had no licence and no insurance to drive the vehicle.

He was released under investigation pending the results of a blood test, which found he had been two-and-a-half times over the specified driving limit for cannabis.

Nottingham Magistrates’ Court heard Kumbrija was stopped again on 6 September – again by PC Bird who recognised him from the first arrest.

This time Kumbrija was driving a silver Audi A4 and was stopped in Wollaton Street, in Nottingham city centre, at 2.10pm.

Again he appeared to be under the influence of drugs and so was asked to take a roadside drugs test, which provided a preliminary positive result for cannabis.

He was taken into custody where he consented to providing a sample of blood, which found he was more than twice over the specified driving limit for the Class B drug.

Kumbrija went on to plead guilty to two counts of driving with a proportion of a controlled drug above the specified limit, two counts of driving without a licence, two counts of driving without insurance and one count of possession of a Class B drug.

He was sentenced at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on 24 November.

Following the sentencing, PC Bird said:

“Kumbrija has shown a blatant disregard for the law and can have no complaints about spending Christmas behind bars.

“As we have repeatedly warned, the consequences of drink or drug driving can so easily be fatal and Kumbrija is therefore fortunate not to be spending many Christmases locked in a prison cell.

“I hope he uses his time in custody to reflect on his actions and to change his ways after he is released.”
