Four Nottingham men fined over £1,200 for fishing offences on Grantham Canal, Cotgrave lake and River Trent

The Environment Agency has successfully prosecuted four Nottingham men for fishing offences.

Northampton Magistrates Court heard the cases on Tuesday 18 December 2023 and imposed fines and costs totalling £1254.

Marius Ivanciu, 26, of Nottingham had his case proven guilty in his absence after he was caught fishing without a licence on the Grantham Canal in Nottingham on 8 May 2023.

He was ordered to pay a total of £345. The penalty includes a fine of £150, costs of £135 and a victim’s surcharge of £60.

Grigore Garbriel Vlad, 44, of Nottingham, had his case proven in his absence after he was caught fishing without a licence at Heron Lake near Cotgrave.

George Upton, 20, of Carlton, pleaded guilty to leaving a rod and line with its bait on the hook in the water unattended at Gunthorpe on the River Trent on 6 October 2023.

He was fined £60, ordered to pay costs of £135 and a victim’s surcharge of £26 for a total of £219.

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said:

“We hope these penalties will act as a deterrent to anyone who is thinking of breaking the laws and byelaws for angling in England.

“The case shows how seriously the courts take these offences and these anglers have been rightly punished for the illegal fishing they undertook.

“Fishing illegally can incur a fine of up to £2,500 and offenders can also have their fishing equipment seized.

“We inspect rod licences 24/7, seven days a week to check on cases of illegal fishing.
