Ruth Edwards MP recently hosted a meeting with Highways England to discuss the possibility of bringing an A52 underpass near Sharphill Woods into use as a safer crossing point for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders.
The meeting was a follow-up from Ruth’s recent visit to the underpass to make the case for this change.
During the meeting, Highways England acknowledged the safety concerns which have been raised and announced that funding has been secured to conduct a study into the feasibility of these plans.

The study, which will be completed by the spring of 2022 at the latest, will look into whether the underpass can be made suitable for use by pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders and how it compares to other options.
The study will also look at how to make sure that crossing points across the A52 are integrated into the wider network of footpaths and bridleways in the area.

The meeting included representatives from cycling group Pedals, The Rushcliffe Ramblers, British Horse Society and Councillor Neil Clarke MBE, Chairman for Transport and Environment on Nottinghamshire County Council.

Ruth Edwards said:
“This was an extremely positive meeting with Highways England and I am pleased that Highways England committed to conduct a full study into these proposals.
“I know this is something residents and local groups will be very happy about. Having visited the current crossing points, it is clear that this issue has been going on for too long and action needs to be taken to improve the safety for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders.
“The fact that this route is also a crucial link between Ruddington and West Bridgford only emphasises the need to secure these improvements in order to encourage more active travel in Rushcliffe.

“I will look forward to Highways England publishing the results of their study in the spring and I will continue to work to secure these vital improvements.”
