Holocaust Memorial Day: Emergency services and councils across Nottinghamshire mark 80th anniversary

Today marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz–Birkenau.

As part of Holocaust Memorial Day we’re remembering the millions of people who died, and a lantern has been placed next to a memorial plaque at our headquarters by Chief Constable Kate Meynell ( pictured ) as a mark of respect to everyone who lost their lives in the holocaust and who have suffered in more recent genocides.

As part of the memorial day, the public are being asked to light a candle at 8pm to remember those who were murdered for who they were, and to stand against prejudice and hatred today.

Nottinghamshire County Council

Today, Monday 27 January, marks the annual Holocaust Memorial Day.

A candle was lit in memory as part of an an event led by the council Chairman and the Vice Lord-Lieutenant for Nottinghamshire. This year’s theme is ‘For a Better Future’.

Today is Holocaust Memorial Day, which this year also marks 80 years since the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.
Join us tonight at 8pm on the steps of the Council House for the lighting of a candle by Council Leaders as we reflect on the Holocaust genocide.

Newark and Sherwood District Council

We led a small ceremony today to pay respect to victims of genocide on Holocaust Memorial Day. The small remembrance service was held at the Irena Sendler statute on London Road in Newark.

Holocaust Memorial Day encourages the remembrance for the six million Jews who lost their lives during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people who died under Nazi persecution of other groups and in genocides that followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

Today’s small ceremony provided an opportunity for people to pay tribute to victims of the Holocaust.

Wreaths were laid by His Majesty’s Deputy Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire Air Chief Marshal Rt’d Sir Andrew Pulford, Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Manchester Ireneusz Truszkowski, representatives of the Polish Airman’s Association UK, Newark and Sherwood District Council Chair Councillor Jean Hall and Newark Town Mayor Councillor Diane Ledger.

On Holocaust Memorial Day, we remember the lives lost.

Tonight at 8pm, let’s light a candle and place it in our windows, standing together against hatred. Please remember to follow safety guidelines when lighting candles.

Mansfield District Council

The Broxtowe community came together on Monday 27 January at 11am for Holocaust Memorial Day in the Walled Garden at Bramcote Hills Park.
