Police are appealing for any more information that could help identify the people concerned.
A homeless man who is described as Black and mild-mannered was located near the corner of Bridge Field towards the Edward Road and railway cutting side in West Bridgford.
The incident happened at 4:30 pm on Saturday 3 May.
Winesses to the incident told The Wire:
‘A group of young males approached the man, some started to shout abusive and foul racist language at him.
‘Stones and sticks were thrown in the man’s direction and lasers were pointed at him.
‘At one point we counted 48 in the group.
Police were called and arrived after around 40 minutes.
Witnesses added: ‘The came in with police sirens on and the entire group dispersed, I just want to let others know and warn them of some of the behaviour we saw which was frightening and worrying to witness’
‘Police spoke with us and the victim and assured us that an investigation would be launched.’
A spokesperson for Nottinghamshire Police said: “Officers are investigating after we received reports of a homeless man being harassed by a group of youths.
“The group reportedly threw stones and shone laser pens at the man on Saturday afternoon (3 May). It was also reported one youth played loud music with racist lyrics in close proximity to the victim.
“Officers located the victim and checked on his welfare. A statement was provided and enquiries to trace those involved are ongoing.
“Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is asked to call 101 quoting reference 25*255548.”
A Rushcliffe Borough Council spokesperson said: “We take any reports of anti-social behaviour and racially related incidents at our parks and open spaces exceptionally seriously and we are working with Police to investigate the circumstances of this incident.
“RBC has a joint problem-solving plan in place with local partners to tackle anti-social behaviour in West Bridgford Town Centre and work is ongoing to reduce incidents.”
