Hyson Green anti-social behaviour down 80% say police

A month of additional hotspot patrols, action days and community engagement has continued to curb crime in Hyson Green over the summer.

The Safer Streets Initiative, coordinated by the Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner, is designed to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour (ASB) in towns over the warmer months in a bid to enhance public confidence in policing and public safety.

Throughout August, the city central neighbourhood policing team, alongside key partners, have continued their hard-hitting action.

This work has included 100 hours of dedicated patrols around Asda, Castle Retail Park and Radford West.

Results include five drug seizures, three weapon seizures, and a reduction of 80 per cent in reports of ASB around Asda this August compared to the same month in 2024.

Four youth engagement events were hosted at Bridlington Street Park, which provided parents and adults with the chance to discuss crime prevention advice, and youths to meet their local police team.

City council officers have also carried out 32 hours of extra patrols, with results including 38 illegal products seized from businesses –  taking 22 counterfeit toys and 16 vapes off the streets.

Fifty houses which are of multiple occupancy (HMOs) were visited on a second day of action by the council team, leading to six licence holders being contacted to ensure the safety of shared rental properties in the area.

Inspector Elizabeth Gaskin, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“These positive results are a testament to the hard work of our officers alongside local partners.

“Curbing anti-social behaviour within Hyson Green remains a top priority for the team, and this work combined with the arrests of prolific shoplifters during action days has added to the success of the month.

“Officers have also been conducting vehicle stops, and through this proactive work, four people have been arrested across two separate incidents on suspicion of possession with the intent to supply.

“The hard work doesn’t stop here though, and I want the public to know that we will continue to crack down on offenders to make Hyson Green a safe place to live, work and visit.

“If you have concerns for crime in your area, don’t hesitate to report it to us. We’re here to respond and act on any community intelligence.”

Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner Gary Godden said:

“Hyson Green has been a key focus for my Safer Streets Summer initiative, and these results show the impact of strong partnership working.

“An 80 per cent fall in antisocial behaviour is a huge step forward, but this is also about giving the community confidence and pride in their neighbourhood.

“My Police and Crime Plan is clear – safer streets and stronger communities must always come first.”
