Lenton: £300,000 cannabis factory shut down by police

A separate investigation is underway after dozens of cannabis plants were discovered by police following a house fire in Stapleford.

Police shut down a large cannabis grow after acting on information from members of the community.

Officers discovered more than 300 plants in six separate growing areas when they raided a home on Wollaton Hall Drive, Lenton.

City Central neighbourhood policing officers also arrested a 21-year-old man when they executed the Misuse of Drugs Act warrant this morning (Tuesday, 26 November).

He was taken into custody and questioned on suspicion of producing a controlled Class B drug.

Inspector Liz Gaskin, of the City Central neighbourhood policing team, said:

“The cultivation and supply of drugs causes misery and harm to all those it impacts.

“I’m grateful to members of the public who gave us invaluable information about this grow.

“The team developed this intelligence to execute a successful warrant, which put a large cannabis-producing enterprise out of action.

Cannabis grows of this nature can also pose a very significant fire risk to adjoining properties because of the amount of heat they generate and the sheer quantity of highly combustible materials within.

“As a team, we will continue to keep up the pressure, disrupt the supply of illicit drugs, and relentlessly pursue and prosecute anyone involved in drug-related crime.

“We heavily rely on the information given to us by the public, so I’d encourage anyone with concerns about drug use and supply in their area to please report it to us so that we can investigate and act.

“We are constantly working behind the scenes to gather information about those who may be involved in drug supply, and we remain committed to continuing our proactive work to target offenders who are causing misery in our communities and bringing them to justice.”

Meanwhile, a separate investigation is underway after dozens of cannabis plants were discovered by police following a house fire in Stapleford.

Emergency services were called to an address on Manor Avenue shortly after 7pm yesterday (Monday) when a house fire was reported in a terraced property.

The blaze, which is believed to be linked to dangerous alterations made to the electrical system, was brought under control, and nobody was injured.

More than 80 plants were found spread across multiple rooms in the house. The plants have now been removed, and all associated growing equipment put beyond use.

The investigation into who established the grow is ongoing.

Sergeant Simon Boyles, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:
“Cannabis grows of this nature pose a significant fire risk for various reasons – none more so than the illegal modifications that are routinely made in order to bypass electricity meters.

“The required lighting and heating equipment, meanwhile, generates a large amount of heat in an environment often piled high with fertilisers and other chemicals.

“That’s why it’s so important for neighbours to report their suspicions to us at an early stage, because fires like this could very quickly spread to adjoining properties.”

Anyone with additional information about the Stapleford grow is asked to call 101, quoting incident 626 of 25 November 2024. Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
