Police are reminding students to be vigilant by keeping doors and windows locked after arresting a burglary suspect reportedly seen climbing up a house drainpipe.
Officers were called to an address in Lenton Boulevard, Lenton, around 7.15pm on Tuesday (24 September) after it was reported a man had climbed into a house having reached through an open window.
They arrived within minutes and arrested a 37-year-old man inside the house on suspicion of burglary. He remains in custody.
The suspect was additionally arrested on suspicion of theft after inquiries revealed he was also wanted in connection with the theft of a razor from the Tesco Extra store in Beeston on 16 July.
Detective Chief Inspector Claire Gould, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Burglary is an extremely upsetting crime so we can’t emphasise enough the importance of making sure your house or flat is secure.
“A lot of burglaries we investigate are committed by offenders entering through home insecurities, be it open windows or unlocked doors, so we’re urging students, as well as the general public, to be vigilant and take precautions to minimise their chances of becoming a victim of burglary.
“We’d advise people to make sure windows and doors are locked, even if they are only popping out for a few minutes, and to keep valuables out of sight so they can’t be seen by passing members of public or entice opportunistic burglars.
“We know that burglary can have a significant impact on victims and the wider community.
“This is unacceptable I want to reassure people that Nottinghamshire Police is committed to dealing with burglaries, offenders will be arrested, and dealt with swiftly and robustly by dedicated CID teams.”
Nottinghamshire Police has been handing out information guides to students, containing a range of helpful crime prevention advice, as part of the force’s ongoing commitment to supporting its student communities.
Dedicated university policing teams continue to support The University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University student communities.
They are based on respective campuses (Lenton Hurst and Terrace Royal) Monday to Friday and are on hand to provide safety advice as well as support students’ welfare needs.
