New improved Household Recycling Centre announced for West Bridgford

Conservative-run Nottinghamshire County Council have announced plans for a new, improved Household Recycling Centre to serve the West Bridgford and Rushcliffe area.

The announcement comes after a cross-party review by the council found that the existing site located on Rugby Road in West Bridgford is difficult to access and no longer fit for purpose.

Newark’s new site was highlighted as an example of what could be delivered for West Bridgford.

The new site for West Bridgford will open ahead of the closure of the existing site and is set to be located on the West Bridgford / Gamston border on the edge of the A52, which the review says will help improve access for those in West Bridgford and residents across Rushcliffe.

The council notes that the current Rugby Road site is plagued by queues at busy times, clogging up the roads for local residents and causing safety concerns. This new site will be more accessible and easier for residents to use, including providing a wider range of items that can be recycled.

With Rushcliffe set to see a huge increase in housing, because of the Labour Government’s new housing targets, the area was identified in need for a larger facility to meet demand and improve access for visitors.

West Bridgford West County Councillor Gordon Wheeler said: “The Current Rugby Road site has served our community well, but it does not meet the current and future needs of the community. Rugby Road is constantly blocked at busy times with car engines running all the while.

“We need a new centre that is safe to access and can offer improved facilities. I am glad the new site will only be minutes away from my division to ensure my residents can still access the facility conveniently, while improving the safety of the local community.”

Nottinghamshire County Council Transport and Environment Cabinet Member Neil Clarke said: “Improving our network of recycling centres has been highlighted as a priority by residents. And following a cross-party review at County Hall, we’ve taken action to deliver that investment in a way that has little to no disruption to normal services.

“The only way any tips will close in the future will be because we’ve built and opened a new replacement nearby. That is a huge improvement for those who make use of them, and much more accessible.”
