Man charged after A1 collision leads to axe being found in vehicle

A man has been charged with dangerous driving and other motoring offences following a collision on the A1.

Officers were called to the A1, near South Muskham,  just after 5.30pm on 12 February following reports of erratic driving.

The car reportedly drove at high speeds southbound, passing between both lanes whilst making contacting with other vehicles.

At one point, the car collided with another vehicle and they both crashed into the central reservation. No one was seriously injured.

A suspect was located nearby and apprehended that evening. An axe was then recovered from the footwell of the car.

Lee Briggs of Bath Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield, has been charged with dangerous driving, drug driving, and driving without insurance.

The 40-year-old man has also been charged with fraudulent use of number plates, driving whilst disqualified, possession of a pointed article, and using threatening / abusive / insulting words / behaviour with intent to cause fear of / provoke unlawful violence.

He appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Monday (16 February) and was remanded into custody.

Briggs is next due to appear at Nottingham Crown Court on 16 March.

Detective Constable Richard Brown, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“As a force, we are committed to keeping our roads safe, so will always look to respond robustly to any road user deemed to be putting this safety at risk.

“Dangerous driving can lead to catastrophic consequences, and I’m glad we have now charged a suspect in connection with this incident.”
