A man has been charged following a burglary at a Nottingham coffee shop.
Officers were called to Caffè Nero, in King Street, following reports of an alarm activation at approximately 3.45am on Wednesday (3 September).
It was reported an intruder accessed the premises via an insecure door before fleeing empty handed after being disturbed by a resident living in a flat above the shop.
Police were called and officers quickly located and detained a suspect. The arresting officers were racially abused during the arrest, while a custody cell was later damaged.
Enquiries found the suspect was wanted on a recall to prison after he was linked to a burglary at a shop in Broad Street, Nottingham, on Tuesday (9 September), in which goods to the value of £434.20 were stolen.
He was also wanted in relation to a theft from Greggs, in Clumber Street, on 23 August.
Ashley Lawrence, 37, of no fixed address, has been charged with two counts of burglary and using racially aggravated words with intent to cause harassment, alarm or distress. He has also been charged with criminal damage and theft.
He has been remanded into custody and is due to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court today (5 September).
