Inquest concludes into death of woman injured in Radford bungalow fire

A three-day inquest has concluded into the death of Izabela Chalastra, who died after sustaining serious burns in a fire at her home in Radford in March 2024.

Assistant Coroner for Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire, Neena Sharma, said Ms Chalastra died on 7 March 2024 at Nottingham City Hospital following a fire at her home on Forster Street on 1 March 2024. An open conclusion was recorded.

She said: “While the fire most likely originated in the rear bedroom, the severity of the damage throughout the property meant it was not possible to determine the exact cause. My thanks go to Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) and Nottinghamshire Police for their thorough investigations.

“I would also like to extend my sincere condolences to Izabela’s family.”

On 1 March 2024, just after 5 pm, NFRS was called to a fire at a bungalow on Forster Street in Radford. Crews arrived to find the property well alight, with Ms Chalastra outside with serious injuries. She was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital, where she sadly died six days later.

Station Manager and Fire Investigation Officer, Jim Dykes, said: “This was a deeply tragic incident which highlights how quickly fire can take hold, particularly where there are a number of risk factors present. On behalf of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, I would like to offer our condolences to Izabela’s family and loved ones.”

The inquest also heard that there were several risk factors present within the property, including unsafe smoking practices, alcohol use, electrical items, and the use of a portable cooking stove. While a smoke alarm was present within the property, it had been made ineffective.

Jim added: “I want to take this opportunity to remind people to ensure they have adequate smoke alarms within their properties and that they are tested regularly to ensure they work in case of an emergency.

“We aim to ensure our high-risk communities across Nottinghamshire are as safe as possible, so, if you know somebody who could benefit from a Safe and Well Visit, please get in touch.”
