Man charged after café owner threatened with assault

A suspect has been charged after reports that a man threatened a Stapleford café owner and threatened to damage property after refusing to leave the premises.

Neighbourhood officers carried out lines of inquiry after it was reported that an intoxicated man had threatened to assault the owner and smash the windows on the afternoon of 12 September.

Inquiries led to a suspect being arrested after officers had also received reports of drinks being stolen from the Sainsbury’s Local store in Stapleford on 20 September.

Mohamed Ahmed, aged 22, formerly of Rossell Drive, Stapleford, has been charged with using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour, threatening to damage property and theft from a shop.

He has since been released on bail, with strict conditions not to enter the café or the Sainsbury’s store and not to possess an open or unsealed container of alcohol in a public place.

He is due to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on 6 November.

PC Erin Bellaby, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“Offences of this nature can have a considerable ripple effect on entire communities, including local businesses, their owners, employees and customers.

“We want to see our shops and businesses thriving. Shop theft will not be tolerated, and staff and customers should not have to put up with aggressive or abusive behaviour towards them.

“We will continue to take firm steps to protect our local retailers and will always take robust action against offenders who can cause harm to local businesses.”
