A man is due in court after a police officer was dragged into a busy road while apprehending the rider of an electric bike in Nottingham city centre.
Two officers were on patrol in a marked police vehicle when they saw a Sur-Ron bike enter an off-licence on Mansfield Road, near the junction with Peel Street.
One of the officers got out of the police car and ran towards the shop in an attempt to stop the bike.
The officer tried to stop the rider as the bike was ridden out of the store and was dragged into a bus lane.
The incident took place at 11 pm on Thursday 27 August. The rider was arrested and the electric bike was seized under Section 165 of the Road Traffic Act 1988.
Kyreece Byfield, of Hethbeth Court, The Meadows, Nottingham, has been charged with dangerous driving, driving without a licence, driving without insurance, failing to stop when required by a constable and common assault of an emergency worker.
The 24-year-old was granted bail with conditions not to ride any electric or mechanically propelled bike and is due to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on 25 September 2026.
Chief Inspector Kylie Davies, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:
“This highlights the risks officers face when responding to incidents involving e-bikes in the city centre.
“Dangerous riding can have serious consequences for riders, officers and members of the public, and it is fortunate that no one suffered more serious injuries as a result of this incident.
“I would like to commend the officer for their professionalism, courage and determination in apprehending the rider. I hope this case sends a clear message that anyone who ignores the law or puts others at risk can expect robust action to be taken against them.”
