Man jailed after sexually abusing woman while she slept

A man has been jailed after sexually abusing a woman while she slept.

John Kelly was disturbed by his victim just before 11.30pm on 16 February 2022, when she woke to find him sexually assaulting her in her own bed.

Following a thorough investigation by officers – and thanks to the victim swiftly reporting what happened – Kelly pleaded guilty to assaulting a female.

Appearing at Nottingham Crown Court on Wednesday (18 May) he was jailed for 18 months.

The 36-year-old, of Sherwood, was also ordered to abide by a restraining order for five years and placed on the sexual offenders’ register for ten years.

Detective Sergeant Lisa Jones, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“This was an extremely distressing incident for the victim who trusted Kelly but his actions on that evening were completely despicable and I hope his sentence today brings some comfort to the victim knowing he will now serve time behind bars for his crime.

“Thanks to her strength and courage we were able to build a case again Kelly and bring him to justice for his actions.

“It is so important that crimes like this are reported swiftly to us so we can bring offenders to justice so we would ask anyone with any concerns or who has been a victim of sexual assault to come forward and speak to an officer – we are there to listen and will take any reports extremely seriously.”
