Meadows Murder: Victim, 24, died of gunshot wound – investigation continues

Detectives conducting a murder investigation in The Meadows have been granted more time to speak to a suspect.

Emergency services were called to a property in Ryeland Gardens, shortly after 5.30am on Saturday (28 February).

A 24-year-old man sustained a fatal gunshot wound. He was treated at the scene by paramedics but died a short time later.

Police recovered a shotgun within minutes of attending the scene.

A murder investigation was launched following the discovery, and a 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder that same day.

He has since been additionally arrested on suspicion of possessing a shotgun, assaulting an emergency worker and a public order offence.

Detectives were granted extra time yesterday (1 March) afternoon to question the suspect, and he remains in custody.

Detective Inspector Clare Gibson, who is overseeing the investigation, said:

“Our sympathies are with the victim’s family and friends at this difficult time, and they are being supported by our specially trained officers.

“I’d like to reassure residents that we believe this is an isolated incident with no wider risk to the public.

“We have now been granted extra time to continue questioning a suspect as part of our investigation and our inquiries are still ongoing, so we’d ask anyone who has any information but hasn’t shared it with us yet to please do so immediately.

“Officers will be carrying out additional patrols in the area and residents can expect to see an increased police presence while our inquiries continue.”
