Minister for Water and Flooding visits Eastwood

Today Juliet Campbell MP for Broxtowe, and Broxtowe Borough Councillor Will Mee had the honour of welcoming the Government’s Minister for Water and Flooding, Emma Hardy, to Eastwood to hear firsthand the impact of flooding on Broxtowe communities.

This was an opportunity to talk to the Minister about the recent flooding events that took place in Eastwood and Stapleford, and for her to hear from residents directly.

In October 2023 Eastwood was hit by an unprecedented flooding event during Storm Babet. 76 properties were flooded as well as many gardens and businesses.

The Minister Emma Hardy was shown around the area near Beauvale Brook where the flooding was worst. She then headed to Eastwood Town Cricket Club where she met Club Secretary Judith Humphries who described the impact on the club of the flooding.

Residents Rhoda Carlton and Carol Bridgeman also met the Minister and showed her photos of the damage done to their houses. They recounted how quickly the area became overwhelmed by water, and the trauma that the event had on themselves and their neighbours.

Resident Carol Bridgeman said:

“Being listened to was important. Knowing action on the causes of flooding is being investigated reassured me. I now see a way forward in the next steps to minimise any future flood risk.”

The Minister and Juliet Campbell MP will continue discussions on how to ensure Broxtowe is protected from flooding.

Juliet Campbell MP said:

“I was very pleased that the Minister was able to come to Broxtowe to talk to affected families and to assure them that they have been heard.

“Residents in Eastwood, and also in other flooded communities in Stapleford, need the assurance that everything is being done to ensure that this won’t happen again.”
