Residents of Musters Road threw open their gardens to large numbers of visitors who put their hands in their pockets to make this the best Open Gardens event yet.
Organiser Poppy Mosesson was able to hand over a cheque for £6,189 to The Friary’s CEO, Ben Talbot, appropriately enough in The Friary’s own allotments, a stone’s throw from Musters Road.
Poppy said: “This was all down to the hard work of everybody involved in Open Gardens, from the garden owners to the cake makers to the young volunteers who served the refreshments with such enthusiasm.
“It also says much about the generosity of our visitors. Rather than pricing the tea and cakes, we invited people to ‘make a contribution’, which they did willingly, knowing that the proceeds were all going to an excellent local cause.”
Ben Talbot expressed his appreciation of the efforts made by so many people to support The Friary in its vital work.
Ben said: “We are hugely grateful to the organisers of Musters Road Open Gardens. We will make very good use of the money that has been raised, but we also welcome the greater awareness that people will have of the work we do. In particular, the Open Gardens event has put a focus on our allotments, which provide our service users with meaningful activity in a safe environment and, by the way, grow the fruit and vegetables that we use in our kitchen.
“We are delighted that the allotments are able to benefit people in a number of different ways.”
The next Musters Road Open Gardens will be held on Sunday 18 June 2028.
The Friary is a registered charity which operates in West Bridgford, Nottingham. It caters for the needs of the most vulnerable in our society by supporting people into recovery and advocating for those without a voice. Every year, the charity caters for 15,000 visits from local people who are suffering the effects of homelessness, substance misuse, financial destitution, and social isolation.
