New all electric ranger buggies for Rushcliffe Country Park

Rushcliffe Country Park has welcomed a range of new electric buggies to continue to drive down its carbon footprint and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 100 per cent.

Rushcliffe Borough Council has introduced the new vehicles replacing their former diesel based fleet that aids the park’s rangers and volunteers from the Friends of Rushcliffe Country Park who travel thousands of miles a year around the 88 hectare site.

The buggies new greener engines mean they are also much quieter, helping to not disturb the park’s wildlife and the teams complete key tasks day in day out to keep the park well maintained, boosted by their recent 18th consecutive Green Flag Award.

It will also help the rangers and volunteers when hosting events such as their current summer events programme which starts today.

The introduction of the converted vehicles comes as part of the council’s Carbon Clever project and environmental priority, as it aims to be carbon neutral by 2030.

It follows 21 of the Council’s frontline waste vehicles making the switch to be fuelled by hydrogenated vegetable oil earlier this year with a further roll out to some of the smaller vehicles in the overall fleet of 60 across the Council’s waste and Streetwise functions continuing.

RBC’s Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Wellbeing, ICT and Member Development Cllr Jonathan Wheeler said: “This such a positive development for the park, with the team and volunteers from the Friends group leading by example to thousands of visitors to the park each week.

“The benefits of switching to more carbon clever vehicles for our environment are significant and it’s heartening the miles the buggies do year after year will also have a reduced impact on the park’s extensive wildlife.

“This is an integral part of our journey to become net zero in our own operations by 2030 whilst ensuring any changes still provide reliable alternatives that don’t affect day to day operations and continue to enhance the reputation of this wonderful open space.”
