New roof secures future for Burnside Memorial Hall in Plumtree

The Trustees of Burnside Memorial Hall, Plumtree, are delighted to announce that work to install a new slate roof on the hall has now been successfully completed.

Built in 1921, Burnside Memorial Hall is a valued community asset serving the villages of Plumtree, Normanton-on-the-Wolds and Clipston-on-the-Wolds, as well as neighbouring communities including Tollerton, Keyworth, Cotgrave and Bradmore.

The roofing project cost £56,961 and was fully funded through a grant from FCC Communities Foundation. Without this generous support, the future of the hall could have been placed at risk due to the deteriorating condition of the existing roof.

The work was carried out by local company NRA Roofing & Flooring Services Ltd, who completed the project to a high standard while ensuring there was no disruption to the hall’s regular activities and community use.

Commenting on the completed project, Trustee Mike Clark said:

“We are delighted with the result and believe this new roof will provide a lasting legacy for future generations of hall users. The hall plays an important role in community life, and this investment helps secure its future for many years to come.”

As part of the project, a new weathervane has also been installed on the roof. Funding for the weathervane was provided through a bequest left to the hall by trustee Frank Mason. Reflecting his lifelong involvement in the family timber business, the design features a craftsman working with wood, creating a fitting and lasting tribute to his contribution to the hall.

FCC Communities Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that awards grants to community projects through the Landfill Communities Fund. Its support has enabled Burnside Memorial Hall to preserve and improve a key local facility that continues to benefit residents across the area.

Cheryl Raynor, FCC Communities Foundation Grant Manager, said: “We are proud to have supported the restoration of Burnside Memorial Hall, a facility that plays such a vital role in bringing the local community together. Projects like this ensure that important community spaces are preserved and remain accessible for future generations to enjoy. The new roof will help safeguard the hall for years to come, enabling it to continue serving residents across the surrounding villages.”
